Barcelona confirmed that Frenkie de Jong was finally back in first-team training on Monday as he contines his recovery from an ankle injury.

De Jong has been out of action since April with a troublesome ankle problem but does finally appear to be closing in on a comeback.

A lot had been said about De Jong’s injury in recent weeks, with Ronald Koeman claiming it’s a real worry and the midfielder eager to avoid surgery, and it’s hoped this is a big step forwards.

There’s still no return date set for De Jong but Barca will be hoping it’s not too much longer until the Dutchman can make his first appearance of the season.

Hansi Flick is already without several players and has also lost Dani Olmo to a hamstring problem this week that will rule him out for 4-5 weeks.

The return of De Jong would be a massive boost, with Gavi also hopefully not too far off a return either after returning to training last week.
